A Wakefield community group had their relaxing Sunday of fishing dramatically interupted when a “massive” unexploded device was found. At 10am today, a member of magnet fishing group Yorkshire Magneteers Ltd David Broadbent was throwing pebbles into Calder Wetlands water when he “noticed something in the water that looked like a big pipe”. Concerned it could be something more sinister – like a bomb – he called West Yorkshire Police. Seven police cars raced to the scene at Calder Park, in Peel Avenue, at 10.26am. Police cordoned off the park while they searched the area. Another member of the fishing group, Kerry Evans, said the device was about 20 inches long and 10 inches wide. It was said to be found in the water behind Swan and Cynet pub. Kerry said: “We were ready to leave the park due to how cold it was, but David wanted a throw. He noticed something in the water like a big pipe so wanted to get it. “He then realised it was a suspected unexploded device. He was very proud. We were all shocked – it was the last place we thought of finding one.” Kerry added her fishing group were told to leave the site and police closed it off the members of the public while they retrieved the device.
