More explosive devices have been found and made safe on a beach in West Sussex. A controlled explosion of suspected ordnance was carried out at Medmerry Beach, near Selsey, on Saturday. Selsey Coastguard Rescue Team said a cordon was put in place after reports of suspicious objects. It said: “Ordnance comes in different shapes and sizes and ordnance found on this beach in the past has been found to still be highly explosive.” The coastguard called in an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team which carried out the controlled explosion.”A controlled explosion was carried out on a couple of the pieces as they were still explosive,” the coastguard said. The public has been warned not to touch anything “suspicious or unusual” they find along the coast and to dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.
If you find anything that appears to be an explosive device, do not touch it, leave it where it is and call the police. We will contact the appropriate agencies to properly dispose of the item.
