An ‘unexploded device’ was detonated by bomb squads on a Merseyside golf course. Police were called to a woodland in Eastham on Friday April 1 to reports of an unexploded device, which had been found by walkers close to a river. Large parts of the woodland was cordoned off as witnesses reported seeing MATRIX police vans in the area. The device was then removed by police for safe disposal. Footage from Brackenwood Golf Club later that day shows a large explosion on the green, filmed by onlookers. It has since been confirmed by police that the explosion on the golf course was the device found in Eastham, believed to be an unexploded World War Two bomb. Explosive Ordnance Disposal Teams carried out the detonation on the out of use golf club, which had only closed just last week. Members of the golf club were not happy with the bomb being detonated on the green, a spokesperson for the club said: “Blowing up a bunker on the first day the course closed wasn’t popular at all with Brackenwood golf club, its members or our residents who passionately care about the course.” A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: ” [We can] confirm the device found in Eastham was taken to Brackenwood Golf Club to be safely detonated by EOD.”
