An explosive device which was fished out of Exeter Quay has been identified as a World War Two Mills Bomb. The bomb was found by local magnet fishers hunting for treasure on Friday afternoon (December 30). At around 3.30pm on Friday, Devon and Cornwall Police were called to Exeter Quay to reports of what appeared to be a hand grenade which had been pulled from the water. A cordon was set up around the area while officers assessed the situation, and the Royal Navy’s bomb disposal unit was called.  After examining the bomb, experts found it to be a WWII Mills Bomb, one of the most widely used hand grenades throughout the First and Second World Wars. As the bomb is relatively small in size, and was not deemed complicated, officers opted to detonate the device a short distance away from where it was initially found. A Royal Navy spokesperson said: “The Royal Navy Bomb Disposal unit from Devonport in Plymouth identified the device as a WWII Mills Bomb. As it was a relatively small and simple device, rather than remove it, it was taken a short distance away and disposed of in situ.
