Ellesmere Port and Neston. By Angela Ferguson. Police and bomb squad officers were scrambled after an unexploded Second World War bomb was found by walkers in Stanney Woods in Ellesmere Port. The device was thought to be a German Luftwaffe 1kg incendiary bomb. It was spotted just off one of the main footpaths in the woods by a family out walking. The device was described in a social media post as an “odd looking cylinder”. Police were called out yesterday (March 8) and they attended along with the bomb disposal experts from the Royal Logistics Corps, with a series of controlled explosions then taking place. Adam Dandy told CheshireLive he and fellow nearby residents were warned about the controlled explosion. It apparently had to be carried out after bomb squad experts couldn’t determine exactly what the device was. He said he was told an “odd looking cylinder” partially exposed had been spotted off one of the main paths in Stanney Woods and that it was believed to be a German Luftwaffe 1kg incendiary bomb. And local councillor Simon Eardley posted on his Facebook page: “Never a dull moment. This WW2 bomb was made safe within Chorlton-by-Backford yesterday (March 8) evening after it was discovered in nearby Stanney Woods. The noise from the controlled explosion naturally caused alarm for some residents (and livestock etc) unaware of what might be taking place.” A Cheshire Police spokesperson said: “At around 2.40pm on Wednesday 8 March, police were called to reports that a possible historic explosive device had been found in Stanney Woods, Ellesmere Port.
