Halton. By Nathan Okell. AN explosion was carried out by specialists after a Second World War grenade was handed in to police yesterday, Monday. A member of the public attended Widnes Police Station and told officers that the explosive device was in his car. Explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) specialists from the military were called in to safely neutralise the device through a controlled explosion. This was carried out on fields next to Dundalk Road in Widnes at around 7.50pm near to children playing football. It was captured on camera by passer-by Hannah Spencer, who reported a number of police cars in attendance. A spokesman for Cheshire Police said: “A member of the public attended Widnes Police Station at around 6.20pm on Monday, May 30, to hand in a suspected WW2 incendiary device. “The device was left in the man’s car in a car park on Widnes Road. As a precautionary measure the decision was made to put a cordon in place and EOD specialists were called to the scene. The device was taken away to a nearby field, safety measures were put in place and a controlled explosion was carried out by EOD.”
