Saunders County. Contaminated groundwater in Saunders County has been a major concern for decades. The source is a site where manufacturers made bombs during World War II and the Korean War. On Wednesday night, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) held an open house at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Country Club in Yutan regarding its efforts to minimize the pollution left behind. The former Nebraska Ordnance Plant less than a mile south of Mead was where the Nebraska Defense Corp. put together bombs loaded with TNT and other explosives.
