West Oxfordshire. By Samantha King. Police in Oxfordshire have disposed of a live grenade that was uncovered during a house move. The explosive, dating back to World War Two, was a family heirloom and had been passed down through relatives. Thames Valley Police officers in Witney were called by a family who uncovered the Mills Bomb No 36 while moving address. It was disposed of with the help of the Bomb Disposal Team. Sharing news of the find on Facebook, TVP Cherwell wrote: “At the end of a long six day set of shifts, it’s safe to say that the start of the set went off with a bang for team one at Witney. Officers were called by a family who had discovered a relic of the past when moving address which had been handed down over the years by relatives. “With the help of Bomb Disposal (RLC) the munition was identified as a live Mills Bomb No 36 dating back to World War Two and disposed of in a safe manner.” The Bomb Disposal team said finds such as these were “not uncommon”. TVP continued: “We advise all members of the public to ring 999 and assume anything which presents as an explosive device or a suspicious package as live and dangerous until verified otherwise by the experts.”
