A research team led by Yumnam Rajeshwar, war researcher, visited Luwangsang-gol village under Kangpokpi district yesterday to spread awareness among the people as part of the Don’t Touch Campaign. The team visited the village to educate the people about unexploded WWII bombs as the mountain ranges in close vicinity of the village were part of the Kanglatongbi Battle during WWII. Speaking at a gathering held at the residence of the chief of Luwangsang-gol village, Yumnam Rajeshwar stated that as Manipur was one of the battle during WWII, many unexploded bombs have been recovered by unsuspecting citizens and in some unfortunate accidentally exploded and caused injury and worse. The Don’t Touch campaign was launched in order to stop such tragic incidents from happening again by educating the villagers in the surrounding areas of WWII battle sites on what to do and who to call when they find unexploded bombs and other weapons. Seikhokai Kilong, son of the village chief, stated that such a campaign will empower the people to protect themselves. Citing recent cases of discovery of unexploded WWII bombs, he urged people to exercise caution while launching new undertakings in areas close to battle sites of WWII and pleaded with people to support this campaign.
