Article and photo by Sandhills Sentinel reporter Daniel Gwyn. Daniel has been reporting breaking news for Sandhills Sentinel since 2020.

A resident in a quiet neighborhood just outside of Vass got quite the surprise while preparing to move on Wednesday afternoon. While rummaging through old boxes in her garage, she came across a grenade from the World War II era. The resident did not know if the grenade was live and called emergency services as a precautionary measure. Sandhills Sentinel spoke to authorities on the scene who confirmed the grenade was real at one time many years ago, but has since been decommissioned and is no longer a threat. Cypress Pointe Fire Department responded to the scene and shut down Pinetop Drive as a precaution while agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and State Bureau of Investigation responded to examine the grenade. After investigating, they determined it to not be a threat. The SBI took possession of the defunct grenade. Responding units were Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and State Bureau of Investigation.
