Papua New Guinea military personnel are calling on the United States to do more to help clean up unexploded ordinance left over from World War Two. Captain Derek Levi, a field engineer in the PNG Defence Force, said a letter to the US embassy to clear a US ammunition dump near Lae fell on deaf ears. He says the area is still dangerous for locals, more than 80 years after the war. “The locals want to get back to their old lives with farming and things like that. But they can’t because they are restricted,” he said.
