Links to the Cold War

Away from its pretty cottages and welcoming pubs, the village is home to Orford Ness – a shingle spit that has been used for various ‘top secret’ experiments including ballistic tests and even atomic weapons research. Now a nature reserve, it is still home to abandoned and forbidding military buildings which gives it an eerie, post-apocalyptic atmosphere. Suffolk Live reports that the Ness’ military service began in 1913 when the War Department turned a section of the 2,000 acre spit into airfields. It adds that the area was used for a vast array of military experiments, such as bomb testing and aerial photography. In 1935, physicist Sir Robert Watson-Watt and a team of scientists used the island to work on anti-aircraft radar systems, which would later provide crucial assistance to the nation’s Second World War efforts. The Ness’ role during the Second World War also focused on firing trials.

Unexploded ordnance

Visitors to Orford Ness have previously described how they have to avoid straying from designated pathways so they don’t accidentally come across any unexploded devices. One wrote: “This National Trust site embraces key 20th century military history in the development of radar and Britain’s atomic bomb research. The structures and sites will surprise you. Not appropriate for young children as there is a risk of unexploded ordnance off the designated pathways. But don’t let this put you off – this is part of our very recent history which must not be forgotten.”
