Kiwis are being reminded if they find an unexploded bomb, not to touch it. The advice from police and the Defence Force comes after a recent issue in the Rangitīkei town of Marton, where a person who found explosive components moved it to another area, prompting the lockdown of a nearby school. Between 2019 and 2020, the Defence Force’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was called to 164 domestic call-outs involving unexploded military equipment. If one was found, the advice was not to touch it, to leave the area and call 111 immediately.
If you find anything that appears to be an explosive device, do not touch it, leave it where it is and call the police. We will contact the appropriate agencies to properly dispose of the item.
