Llanfairfechan. The Army was alerted to a possible “unexploded bomb” on a Snowdonia peak. The object, which was reportedly around two inches long, was spotted by a walker on Tal Y Fan – a Marilyn on the Carneddau range – on Thursday. According to Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue, North Wales Police was contacted after the object was discovered. The police in turn passed on an image of the object to the Army who were able to identify it. Luckily, officers were not needed at the scene as the object was said to be an old smoke bomb which could be discarded by the walker. Ogwen Valley Mountain Rescue posted: “The Jubilee Bank Holiday started with a bang (OK, but it could have) when a call came from North Wales Police regarding a walker who had found “An unexploded bomb”! “The Police requested that we provide a clear picture and location to pass on to the Army explosive ordnance disposal team. Fortunately the informant was able to do this and no team deployment was necessary. The ex soldiers on the team quickly identified it as an old 2 inch smoke bomb.”
If you find anything that appears to be an explosive device, do not touch it, leave it where it is and call the police. We will contact the appropriate agencies to properly dispose of the item.
