To the surprise of his parents, a schoolboy came home on Monday with a hand grenade he found on the grounds near his middle school in Oulad Ayad, Beni Mellal. Local media reports indicate that the child was not aware of the specific nature of the object he found as he carried it home. Alarmed, the child’s father called the police to intervene. Upon his surprise, the father promptly carried the grenade outside and placed it in a deserted area. After the police arrived at the child’s house, they secured and evacuated the house perimeter while waiting for relevant authorities to carry out security protocols before removing the grenade. One student told a local news outlet that the boy, not knowing it was a grenade that could detonate, was playing with the object on his way back home. The incident created panic among the residents of Oulad Ayad as people feared the grenade might detonate, one eye witness told local media. After imposing a security perimeter around the grenade, the weapon remained unmoved for over two hours as the police waited for the relevant authorities to neutralize the threat. The hand grenade is believed to have originated from the colonial era in Morocco, spanning between 1912 and 1956.
