Baladna Social Development Organization, active in war remnants collection in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur State, has cleared significant quantities of war remnants, including ammunition and unexploded ordnance, from homes, schools, markets, and public squares left behind by recent clashes between the army and the Rapid Support Forces. The organization’s director, Mohamed Hashim Al-Zaki, told Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday that from May 25 to December 25 of last year, they removed 771 cartloads of remnants from citizens’ homes and around 5,000 cartloads and unexploded ordnance and mines from Nyala’s main market and sites near the army headquarters. Al-Zaki further disclosed that since January, they have responded to 500 reports of unexploded ordnance and cartloads inside citizens’ homes across various neighbourhoods of Nyala city. Additionally, they have cleaned up the orphanage complex in the Duraig neighbourhood, removing war remnants. In recent days, Mohamed said their efforts extended to cleaning up the Neem Forest park, removing war remnants like ammunition and unexploded ordnance. This cleanup has enabled citizens to enjoy spending Ramadan there, particularly in light of the city’s electricity shortages. Hashim issued a cautionary message to families, urging them to remain vigilant regarding war remnants, emphasizing the importance of not burning waste or debris near homes. He highlighted a tragic incident last Friday in the Khartoum Bilail neighbourhood, where a significant explosion occurred due to burning waste, resulting in casualties. Currently, they are addressing twenty reports of war remnants in homes and ten reports in schools, Hashim disclosed. Additionally, he advised residents of neighbourhoods adjacent to the army headquarters, who had evacuated during the war, to visit Baladna Organization offices before returning home.
