FIREFIGHTERS are unable to reach several fires burning on Salisbury Plain tonight due to “the risk of unexploded ordnance”. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service says the fire, near Urchfont, is a “controlled burn”.  A plume of smoke can be seen as far away as West Swindon. An Ministry of Defence Spokesperson has said: “There are several fires burning within the Salisbury Plain Training Area impact area. “Due to the risk of unexploded ordnance, firefighters cannot enter the impact area. Our team are monitoring the fire and maintaining close communications with Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service, who stand ready to assist should the fire spread beyond the impact area.” The MoD added that all live firing has stopped until the fires have been extinguished.
