The beach at Rosemarkie, on the Black Isle north of Inverness, was cordoned off following the discovery. The coastguard were alerted to the device, thought to be old military ordnance, around midday on Tuesday.

Children played with an unexploded mortar bomb on a beach before being told what it was. The Royal Navy officer said: “Despite its era the explosive was probably intact and still dangerous. These devices should be treated with respect.
