Everything Sean Caloren knows from his military training allowed him to quickly understand he was holding a grenade in a Peterborough park on Canada Day. Caloren, 55, was using a metal detector at Nicholls Oval on Saturday, July 1 morning when his sensor alerted a discovery. The recently retired military veteran, with 32 years of service, says he dug about wrist deep to get his hands on the unknown baseball shaped treasure. As he wiped away the dirt, it registered with Caloren that he had unearthed a grenade. “Everything told me it was real,” Caloren explained. “It actually really scared me.” Caloren says the grenade appeared to be more than 50 years old but had its spoon (safety handle) and pin still in place. “You treat everything like a landmine,” Caloren noted, adding this is something he learned serving in the Bosnian War. Caloren adds he immediately put the grenade down and took a quick picture to show police what he had located. He says officers arrived within 15 minutes and closed the park so police could investigate further. According to Peterborough police Chief Stuart Betts, the Durham Regional Police Service assisted in containing the grenade and used a container for a controlled detonation. The park was closed for approximately four hours.
