This is the moment a paraglider swooped low over an unexploded bomb on Cleethorpes beach, causing a moment of panic among members of the emergency services. A soldier could be seen running towards the glider after it descended to a point alarmingly close to the bomb. Two other gliders turned away after seeing officers gesturing to steer clear. Army bomb disposal experts had set up a perimeter on the beach and were preparing for a controlled explosion. The suspected Second World War bomb had been discovered in the garden of a home in Grimsby earlier on Sunday. Police closed off Lichfield Road, evacuated residents and established a 100-metre cordon this afternoon. The bomb was found in the back garden of a home in Evelyn Grove North, a small cul-de-sac. A bomb disposal team recovered the device and transported it the Cleethorpes to be detonated on the beach, helped by police and Coastguard officers. A crowd gathered in anticipation of a big bang. But the drama continued when the microlite gliders swooped over the beach close to the exclusion zone. The bomb squad asked members of the public to stay at least 200 meters away. Speaking to Grimsby Live’s photographer, who was at the scene, a member of the Coastguard criticised the paraglider pilots for their “dangerous actions”. Flying nearby could have caused “extreme danger to the personnel due to potential firing of the equipment, due to radio equipment,” a Coastguard officer added. “This is not to be taken lightly – it is a serious offence. Please do not do it again.” It was not clear if the pilots had seen soldiers and members of the emergency services on the beach before descending. A short time later, an attempt was made to detonate the bomb. However, although the detonator exploded, the bomb failed to go off. The Army disposal team was then forced to scramble to recover the device ahead of the incoming tide. They then moved to a new site, believed to be at Humberston Fitties, for a second attempt.
