Laurel Park Elementary School students, faculty and staff are safe after the school district said student had an “older, deactivated grenade.” The Wake County Public School System sent a letter to the school’s families on Wednesday afternoon. A parent overheard the student telling classmates they wanted to show them the grenade in their backpack,” the letter reads. “The teacher was immediately alerted and contacted the school administration. “Administration removed the student and their backpack from the classroom.” The Cary Police Department has completed an investigation, according to the school district. The district said authorities at the school have also completed a threat assessment of the campus at 2450 Laura Duncan Road in Apex. “It was determined that the item was not brought to campus with malicious intent, and appropriate disciplinary action has been taken,” the letter reads. The district urged parents not to bring items on campus that could be considered weapons.
