Chatham County. By Ashley Anderson. A bomb squad, police and military personnel are investigating an unusual discovery in a Cary backyard Wednesday afternoon. According to Cary police, a new homeowner living in the 600 block of Kings Fork Road in Cary reached out after an “old military ordnance” was found as landscaping work was being done in the backyard just after 12 p.m. The home is in a neighborhood off of SE Maynard Road. In the military, ordnance is the term used for various ammunition and weaponry and can encompass anything from toxic chemicals to nuclear weapons. In this case, police said the ordnance found was a grenade. While the origin of the grenade remains under investigation, in preliminary findings, police believe the old grenade belonged to the previous owner, who was a retired military veteran.
