It sounds like the ideal place for adrenaline junkies: a village where people are quite literally living on the edge, with a scattering of explosives thrown in for good measure. But for the people of Mappleton, this is just part of the everday reality of life on the East Yorkshire coast. The beautiful community lies next to a popular beach, but the power of the waves – and the unexploded ordnance from a former RAF bombing range – mean some locals feel like they are living on the edge. Reporter Samuel Port, of our sister site Yorkshire Live, recently visited Mappleton to find out what life is like there. Husband and wife Neil and Jane Varley, both 72, own a lodge nearby and say they have witnessed an alarming rate of erosion. “We’ve taken photos of the cliffs and you can they’re disappearing,” says Jane.
