An official at the demining unit says that Libya’s capability is inadequate to manage the remnants of war on its territory, as the UN mission confirmed that more than half a million citizens are at risk of the dangers of mines and unexploded ordnance in Libya. Officer Abdul Ati Al-Jatlawi at the demining unit explained in press statements that there are types of mines that need particular expertise, which the Libyan teams lack, and therefore we need international help in this field. The lack of maps makes it more difficult for our teams to clear the areas, as the conflicting parties refused to hand over such documents, Al-Jatlawi said. On December 13, the British Embassy in Libya said the British Hello Organization had finished mapping areas south of Tripoli where remnants of war may be present, indicating that these maps can help detect mines and explosives.
