The update was provided at the closing ceremony of the milestone Prime Minister Hun Sen’s Project for Mine Action (STP-MA) -Phase 2 held in Snuol district, Kratie province on April 10 under the presidency of Ly Thuch, Senior Minister and First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA). According to the Senior Minister, since the STP-MA’s launch in July 2022, a total of 1,700 demining specialists have been deployed to carry out the mine clearance operations of over 91 square kilometers or 995 mine fields in ten provinces, including Kratie. With the achievement, Kratie is on schedule to achieve mine-free status in June as planned. Prime Minister Hun Sen has appealed for a national movement to contribute to achieving Cambodia’s goal of becoming a mine-free nation by 2025. The STP-MA was oriented toward an impactful motto – “Providing Safe Ground, Creating smile”. Cambodia needs $138 million for the next two years to achieve its mine-free target by 2025, Ly Thuch, first vice president of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authorities (CMAA), said earlier this month. “Of this sum, if the Cambodian government provides $30 million for each year for 2024 and 2025 as it did in 2023, we will have $60 million dollars of the $138 million dollars,” he said during a technical working group meeting on mine action in Phnom Penh.
