Hugo Reid was pottering in the garden with his 7-year-old son on Wednesday afternoon when he dug up a heavy, rusted metal object. The suspicious lump turned out to be a Mills 23 hand grenade, popular with the British in both world wars. Luckily, it was inactive. Kate Radcliffe-Reid, owner of events company RAD Agency and Hugo’s wife, said she arrived home about 1.30pm that day and noticed his odd expression.“I think I’ve found a grenade in the backyard,” Hugo explained. “Are you sure?” she replied. Police arrived at their house in Stanbury Ave, Somerfield, shortly after, and neighbours, a rest home, and the couple and their two sons were evacuated. I was hoping it bloody was something, otherwise I thought, ‘Oh shit, it’s a bit embarrassing, we’ve just cordoned off a street and a half’,” said Radcliffe-Reid. Defence Force bomb experts X-rayed and weighed the object at her property to determine it was an inactive Mills grenade, and possibly 100 years old. Upon leaving the guy said, ‘Oh, and if you find another one, just call us back.’ I think he said we were number five in Christchurch.”
