Police called in the bomb squad, and houses were evacuated, after a hand grenade was found buried in a garden. Police got a call shortly before 7pm yesterday about the discovery by a resident in Cort Crescent, near Braunstone Park, in Leicester. Cordons were put up around Bendbow Rise, Cort Crescent and other nearby streets, and residents stood nearby watching the drama as police and Army bomb experts dealt with the item. The device turned out to be harmless, and the road closures were all lifted by 8.40pm. A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Police said: “Police were called at 6.55pm yesterday to Cort Crescent, Leicester, following a report of an item believed to be a grenade being found in the ground in a garden at a property. Officers attended and in the interests of public safety, road closures were placed in the area and a number of neighbouring properties were evacuated.
