Police have ordered the evacuation of six homes at the southern end of Wood Drive after a potentially explosive mortar shell was found. The ordinance was found by a cleaning crew working on a recently sold home, Chief Paul Francis said in a statement. Essex police and fire responded at 10:33 a.m. after the cleaning crew reported that they found a suspicious item. The house has recently sold and was undergoing cleanout operations. The State Police Bomb Squad responded quickly and based on the initial findings, Essex Police and Fire ordered an evacuation of the surrounding area. As well as the homes evacuated, boaters and swimmers were kept out of nearby portions of Chebacco Lake during the investigation. Later in the day, Francis said state police determined the shell was “an inert training round.” The ammunition was seized and will be handed over to a U.S. Navy explosive ordnance unit for disposal. “A search of the remaining rooms, garage, and shed revealed no additional suspicious or hazardous items,” Francis said. The investigation into the incident is complete and no charges are pending, he added. Police and fire cleared the area around 1:30 p.m. and no one was injured. “Old, unexploded items like this mortar shell can be very dangerous, but that is why we have established policies and procedures for responding to these incidents safely and in collaboration with the appropriate outside agencies,” Francis said. He reminded residents that “they should call 911 if they discover any hazardous, dangerous or potentially explosive items and that they should not move, touch or attempt to transport such items. “The cleaning crew in this instance did everything right, leaving the dangerous item alone and contacting properly trained authorities to render the situation safe,” Francis said.
