Essex. When 11-year-old Joshua Ristanovic was cleaning out his family home’s basement with his mom and two older brothers, his eyes landed on what appeared to be a grenade. “It was like 15 pounds, so I was assuming that it wouldn’t be a toy,” Ristanovic said. “I was hoping it wouldn’t go off. Luckily the pin was still in there.” He told his mom about it and Windsor police was called to the scene. The grenade was left on the home’s front steps. Acting Sgt. Greg McCosh said even though they believed it was hollow, police treated it as a real grenade. “I’m hoping that it’s not, but we’re doing what we need to do to ensure that everybody’s safe.” The tactical rescue unit and emergency disposal unit was called to the scene. McCosh said they have “cleared out probably 12-15 homes” as a precautionary measure. A section of the street was blocked off from access as well. The road re-opened at around 5:30 p.m. Ristanovic said his family has been living there for 14 years. Police suspect the previous homeowners may have left it behind when they moved. McCosh said if people find something similar in their homes, they should contact the Windsor Police Service to have it safely disposed.
Mounties are reminding anyone who comes across explosives or live ammunition to call police for assistance and to not handle them yourself.
