Stockton-on-Tees. By Sue Kirby. A bomb disposal unit has been called to a village in Teesside on Sunday afternoon after an old hand grenade was unearthed in a field. Police were called to the scene in between Redmarshall and Carlton villages, close to Stockton, earlier on Sunday afternoon after an object was discovered. Cleveland Police has now confirmed an old hand grenade was unearthed on some farmland. The road at the Redmarshall side of Kirk Hill, which connects the village to Carlton, was closed to traffic and pedestrians travelling in both directions for around three hours while officers awaited the arrival of the bomb disposal unit from Catterick. When the experts arrived they assessed the situation and then carried out a controlled explosion of the device at around 4.30pm. Police remained on the scene for a while and then the road was re-opened. A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: “Just before 1.45pm today (Sunday) a resident of Carlton Village near Stockton contacted Cleveland Police to report an old hand grenade had been unearthed on farmland there. A cordon was put in place as a precautionary measure while police sought advice from explosives experts.
