It’s understood that a detonation was witnessed off Ryde Sands at first light this morning. Confirmation is being sought. It has now been confirmed that the ordnance was a SC500 bomb, dropped by the Germans during World War II. Due to its size, it was initially feared to be a torpedo. It had been laying in the Solent for over 75 years but has been destroyed by means of a controlled explosion.

If you find anything that appears to be an explosive device, do not touch it, leave it where it is and call the police. We will contact the appropriate agencies to properly dispose of the item.
