Hamas divers who were on a training mission came across the wreck, saw the exposed artillery shells and realized the potential. For several weeks they made dives to the sunken ship and slowly brought the shells ashore, after which Hamas posted pictures of the underwater recovery. The ammunition was taken to underground rocket training workshops in the heart of the Gaza Strip, where they were dismantled by Hamas sabotage experts. It is not known how usable the material will be after being underwater for just over 100 years.

Anche i fondali del mare che abbraccia la Striscia di Gaza sarebbero colmi di residuati bellici risalenti alla prima guerra mondiale. Infatti come esempio la fonte pone l’esempio della Royal Navy HMS M15, nave da guerra classe Monitor, silurata ed affondata nel 1917 da un sottomarino tedesco. Il relitto della nave si trova a meno di un miglio dalla costa della città di Gaza e a una profondità di meno 33 metri. Le munizioni sarebbero una fonte di riferimento per i militanti di Hamas.
