“If you ever come across anything suspicious like this item, please do not pick it up, contact your local law enforcement agency for assistance”
Gary Lindroth
The sign says “Beware of UXOs”. For those unfamiliar with the term, it may conjure up visions of aliens from another world, Roswell New Mexico, X-files and other unidentified flying objects. However, most Soldiers and their families know that UXO, refers to “Unexploded Ordnance”, and the term is a familiar one. When dealing with UXOs the most important fact to remember is that your personal behavior when confronted with a UXO could mean the difference of you walking away safely unharmed versus foolishly inviting or experiencing a severe injury. UXOs are most commonly found in areas that have experienced war such as Iraq and Afghanistan, however many unexploded munitions are often found locally on military training areas by Soldiers during training operations, or civilian hunters walking in areas where live fire training operations have previously been conducted. Occasionally, munitions may fall from military vehicles onto roadways, or worse be intentionally thrown away, referred to as Discarded Military Munitions which are often found in trash dumpsters. Remember, when any unwanted munitions are found, tampering with these UXOs, even the very old munitions, may result in unexpected explosions, sometimes with fatal results. In order to prevent future injuries from found DMMs or other UXO munitions follow established “3R” explosive safety procedures:
Recognize: When you may have encountered a munition and the potential danger.
Retreat: Do not touch, move or disturb the munition.
Report: Call 911 to notify Ft. Stewart- Hunter Army Airfield law enforcement of what you saw and where you saw it. They will arrange for the destruction or pick-up of the hazard by trained Explosive Ordnance Disposal professionals.
By understanding and following these simple procedures we can work together to prevent the next explosive injury. For more information on UXOs and DMMs visit ftstewart.isportsman.net/UXOs. aspx.
If you find anything that appears to be an explosive device, do not touch it, leave it where it is and call the police. We will contact the appropriate agencies to properly dispose of the item.
