Topal is planning to raise his house to put in a basement, and was digging underneath the structure Friday when he hit something. “I hit it with my shovel a couple of times as I was digging, and (then) realized it was an old military shell of some sort,” he said. He dug it out, moved it into the backyard and phoned Vancouver Police. Officers took a look and said it was a job for the bomb squad. Bomb squad officers took a look and said it was a military weapon, so a military bomb squad had to deal with it. But it is based on Vancouver Island, so didn’t come until the following morning. Police cars were stationed in front and behind Topal’s house overnight. The military explosive ordnance disposal team arrived Saturday morning and took it away.
