Thuch, who is also a Senior Minister and Chairman of the 2024 Ottawa Convention, said yesterday that “CMAA praised CMAC for the results of the comprehensive study identifying new minefields in Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Pursat, Preah Vihear, Tboung Khmum, Stung Treng, Siem Reap, and Kampong Thom provinces”. “This research study is a remarkable achievement that makes it easier for all demining operators to identify new minefields and advise citizens to be vigilant in those areas,” he said. Thuch instructed the technical authority of the mine authority to lead the verification of the results of the minefield data found by CMAC and review the minefield map. The demining teams need to update information related to newly discovered minefields, with priority on safety and transparent management for all stakeholders, he said. While many hectares of cleared land are now under cultivation, all demining teams have to follow the technical principles in line with the current situation. Therefore, authorities must advise people to avoid expanding farming beyond areas in the demining plan, he said. The report on findings of new minefields under the direction of CMAA and research by CMAC in collaboration with the Royal Cambodian Army (RCA) was carried out in accordance with a joint cooperation agreement, which was approved by Prime Minister Hun Manet, he said. He called for national and international communities, including the private sector, to help in humanitarian mine action that will greatly assist in resolving not only Cambodia’s but also the global mine crisis and accelerate the journey to a mine-free world.
