In its press statement issued on Tuesday, CMAC said that the China-Aided Cambodia Landmines Elimination Project for phase I and phase II from 2018 to last year costing $10 million has been completed. The Chinese government has provided grants to the Cambodian government through CMAC since 2018 to support humanitarian demining operations in the country, which focused on landmine and UXO clearance, clusters and explosive remnants of war surveys. The aid also centred on strengthening the capacity of the Technical Institute of Mine Action and Dog Centre and the sub-national capacity for mine risk education and victim assistance, the CMAC statement said. It added that the grants were divided into three major phases. For the third phase, CMAC plans to apply for $13.2 from the Chinese government to fund the demining in the three provinces over the next three years (2023 to 2025), according to the statement. The project plans to clear a total area of 101,538,462 square metres of landmines/UXO-contaminated areas in three provinces – Kampong Thom, Siem Reap and Preah Vihear. For this year, the project with an approved amount of $4.4 million will clear a total area of 33,846,154 sqm in Kampong Thom, Siem Reap and Preah Vihear.
