The discovery was made on on Thursday at the waterway in Peam Reang Krom village, Peam Reang commune, Loeuk Dek district. Of the UXO recovered, 8,246 live munitions, and 13,037 mines were destroyed. Experts are also working to locate shipwrecks and piles of debris at the bottom of the river. CMAC director-general Heng Ratana said that the operation to clear the unexploded ordnance and retrieve shipwrecks in the river involves both the CMAC and the National Police, which are operating with the latest available technology and great courage in the river at Loeuk Dek district in Kandal province and Peam Chor district in Prey Veng province. Sar Sokha, Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Working Group to Investigate and Resolve Unexploded Ordnance Disposal in Shipwrecks in Rivers and Seas, said the number of deaths and injuries from landmines and unexploded ordnance is currently alarmingly high, but he observed that support from national and international partners has solved many problems from year to year. He also thanked the leaders of the working groups who have cooperated closely to recover UXO, especially the CMAC unit that led clearance of UXO at the river bottom, an extraordinary result. Sokha also donated $20,000 to the CMAC unit and offered $50 to each unit of the 220 operational forces, in addition to supplying rice, noodles, orange juice and water. The clearance of submerged UXO from Loeuk Dek district in Kandal involved the work of 214 CMAC personnel and six members of the National Police.
