Chittenden. By Melissa Cooney. A Colchester school was evacuated Wednesday after officials found what appeared to be an old hand grenade. Around lunchtime, over 500 students evacuated to the neighboring middle school’s gymnasium after a teacher noticed what looked like a hand grenade on a student’s desk. “It was clear that it certainly wasn’t new. It would have shown signs… above were indications of decay sitting, outside for some time,” said Colchester Police Chief Doug Allen. The Vermont State Police Bomb Squad determined that the grenade was an inert training device, meaning it had no potential threat to safety. Police say the student brought it in after finding it near his home.
