You never know what you’ll find when cleaning out your basement or garage. A Wyandotte family was in for a big surprise after finding a footlocker of old World War I relics which included a potentially explosive device that had to be destroyed by the Dearborn bomb squad. The finding occurred at approximately 3 p.m. Jan. 14 at a house in the 400 block of Superior. According to Wyandotte police, the family was cleaning out their basement when they opened their uncle’s footlocker, which contained relics from World War I. They discovered an explosive device and were uncertain as to whether or not it was live. They didn’t take any chances, so they called the police. Sgt. Gerald Conz and Officer Dan Torolski identified the device as being an unexploded artillery shell from the WWI era. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit from the Dearborn Police Department, commonly known as the bomb squad, was called in for assistance. Police said an explosive specialist removed the device, before it was safely destroyed. Although incidents such as this one are rare, they aren’t unheard of.
