“If you ever come across anything suspicious like this item, please do not pick it up, contact your local law e enforcement agency for assistance”.

Auckland reporters

The bomb squad was called in on Monday to remove “items” that were found at a West Auckland recycling plant. The Defence Force’s explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) team removed the items at the Waitākere Refuse and Recycling Transfer Station on Monday afternoon after police were called at about 3pm. Police declined to answer questions about what the items were, whether the refuse station was the intended target, or whether the items were inert. Police have not ruled out laying any charges and said no arrests have been made yet. Neither the Defence Force nor Auckland Council would comment on the find either, citing the police investigation. The EOD team works underneath the SAS and can respond to chemical, biological and radiological threats. The Waitākere Refuse and Recycling Transfer Station is located on The Concourse in Henderson and accepts and treats waste before bringing it to a landfill or recycling facility. The station accepts items which could be explosive like fuel and a wide range of agricultural and household chemicals. The find comes less than two months after a suspicious package was found at the New Zealand Post mail centre at Auckland Airport. In September, an unexploded mortar shell was disposed of by the EOD team in Epsom where residents were forced to take temporary accommodation and police kept a scene guard in place around it. In April, an inert grenade was found on the Mr Chips factory conveyor belt in East Tāmaki after it had been dug up in a potato field.
