The army bomb disposal unit was called to Arklow on Saturday afternoon after a walker discovered a hand grenade washed up on the shore. Local gardaí responded to the walker’s report about the device, which is believed to date back to the Irish War of Independence, and the army were alerted to attend the scene. The grenade was found on Ennereilly Beach and, upon arrival, gardai promptly cordoned off the scene and evacuated the nearby car park. With the area secured, the Defence Forces Explosive Ordnance Disposal team carried out a controlled explosion on the device. On Ennereilly Beach, at approximately 2.30 p.m. on Saturday, January 6, a walker on the beach found what appeared to be an old hand grenade,” a Garda spokesperson said.
