Army bomb disposal units rushed to an Essex seafront after unexploded WW2 bombs were discovered on the beach. The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from Colchester barracks were called to Chalkwell seafront, Southend, off of the crowstone mudflats, after two WW2 bombs and ordnance were discovered by a local bait digger. Southend Coastguard Officers arrived on the scene to investigate and took photos, measurements and exact locations and sent them over to Dover Coastguard Ops Centre for discussion with Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams. An Army EOD team from Colchester barracks agreed to meet up with the team Thursday morning, (April 7) once the overnight tides had uncovered the item again. A secure cordon was put in place on the seafront whilst the Army EOD team inspected and x-rayed the items in situ and, whilst there, they found a 3rd suspected item of ordnance. As the items were confirmed to be ordnance, the Army EOD team decided to detonate the 3 items.
