A United Nations delegation, led by Ly Thuch, First Vice-President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) and President of the 2024 Ottawa Convention, visited the Techo Peace Museum in Siem Reap on Monday. During the visit, Thuch emphasised that hosting the Ottawa Convention will give Cambodia a valuable opportunity to share its story. Various UN delegates including Muhammad Abdul Muhith, President of the Executive Board of the UN, Lachezara Stoeva, and Vice President of UNICEF’s Executive Board; Krzysztof Maria Szczerski, Permanent Representative of Poland to the UN and board member of UN Women, Philip Trent Ward, Secretary of the UNWFP Executive Board, visited the Techo Peace Museum. The visit was organised by the Cambodian Mine Action Center (CMAC) and was also attended by Heng Ratana, Director General of the CMAC. Speaking on the occasion, Thuch said, “Presidency in this upcoming summit (Ottawa convention) is not merely an obligation; it is an opportunity to share with the world Cambodia’s story – a story that belongs to each village reclaimed, each life saved, and each child who can now walk freely on our soil.” Cambodia was chosen to lead the 2024 Ottawa Convention (Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention) due to its long-standing commitment and significant experience in addressing the impacts of landmines. In November, last year, 164 parties to the Ottawa Convention endorsed Cambodia as the chair and host of the 5th Review Meeting of the Ottawa Convention. The meeting has been named as ‘Siem Reap-Angkor Summit on Mine Free World’. Thuch noted that Siem Reap, once unsafe, is today one of the world’s most visited destinations, embodying the powerful transformation that mine action brings. Thuch stated that the Techo Peace Museum stands as a symbol advocating for a landmine-free world. He emphasised that spreading the message of peace, especially through the museum, has the potential to inspire efforts that bring security, prosperity, and hope both in Cambodia and globally. Thuch thanked UNDP, a valued partner in mine action and safety efforts, saying, “We extend our deepest appreciation for your ongoing support and commitment to Cambodia’s journey.” Gathered here in Siem Reap–a city renowned for its rich history and once scarred by conflict–our efforts to create a mine-free world feel deeply rooted in this land,” he added.
