The war remnants, including explosive and unexploded mines, continue to pose a major concern that threatens the lives of civilians in all areas of Syria, regardless of the controlling parties. These remnants are spread in areas that witnessed military conflict during previous periods, continuing to claim the lives of innocent people and leaving tragic injuries in light of the absence of an effective role by the competent authorities in removing them, in addition to the absence of sufficient awareness among the popular circles to avoid the dangers of war remnants. According to SOHR follow-ups, it documented the death of a child and the injury of six people, including four children, within regime-held areas, “HTS” and “Euphrates Shield”. SOHR renews its call on all international organisations to work on removing unexploded war ordnance across Syrian immediately and to address the problem appropriately, especially since all warring parties throughout Syria continue to plant IEDs and landmines. SOHR also calls upon international organisations to adopt a strategy to raise the residents’ awareness about the threats of old ordnance which may have been planted in abandoned buildings as well.
