In a significant operation spanning several regions, Moldova’s National Army sappers successfully neutralized 18 explosive objects from World War II in February. Led by Major Ivan Cornegruţa, the team executed eight demining missions across Chisinau, Dubăsari, Ialoveni, Ștefan Vodă, Leova, Anenii Noi, and Hâncești, mitigating potential threats to public safety.
Extensive Demining Efforts Across Moldova
The demining operations revealed a variety of explosive ordnance, including artillery shells of different calibers, grenade launchers, and hand grenades, all remnants of the tumultuous times of World War II. The discovery of these dangerous items underscores the lingering risks of unexploded ordnance in previously war-torn regions. Notably, the largest cache of ammunition was unearthed in the city of Ștefan Vodă during construction work at a PECO gas station, where the Codru Battalion, under the leadership of Major Ion Golovei, safely destroyed nine artillery shells, a grenade launcher, and an F-1 hand grenade.
