An old grenade found buried at Nicholls Oval was safely contained and detonated there Saturday afternoon, police report. A person using a metal detector found the hand-held explosive weapon Saturday morning and called police. Durham police assisted city police in locating it and placing it in specialized container where it could be safely detonated, Chief Stu Betts told the community via Twitter. The park was closed for several hours for the investigation. It reopened late in the afternoon. No injuries were reported and Betts indicated that there was no reason for the public to be alarmed.
