HALO Trust Cambodia, an NGO that has been clearing mines and unexploded ordnance in Cambodia in its 2022 report said that more than 30 million square metres of minefields and nearly 20,000 anti-personnel mines have been cleared by experts last year. A report by HALO Trust released on Saturday states that its team cleared 30,441,106 square metres and removed 18,127 anti-personnel mines, 66 anti-tank shells and more than 28,000 explosive remnants of war. The organisation added that 9,262 education courses on mines and explosive remnants of war were conducted, with 83,119 people attending the training. Mile Hawthorn, programme director of HALO Trust Cambodia, has told Khmer Times that demining and removing unexploded ordnance in Cambodia is a humanitarian effort to provide safe land for people to use. He added that since 1991, his organisation has cleared 325,000 mines and 1.7 million unexploded ordnance (ERW) from Cambodian territory. As of November 2022, the organisation has 1,163 staff deployed in some locations to carry out land liberation activities safely. “We currently have 83 demining teams, two technical teams, 12 search teams and two UXO risk education teams, and they are deployed in a number of locations. The three main ones are in Anlong Veng district, Oddar Meanchey province, Thmar Da district, Pursat province and Kamrieng district, Battambang province,” Hawthorn added. He said that all support and assistance for demining activities in Cambodia is important to achieve the government’s goal of making Cambodia mine-free by 2025. Hawthorn said HALO is currently clearing mines and unexploded ordnance in Banteay Meanchey and Siem Reap provinces, as well as other districts.
