Slyne-Hest Bank. Before armed cops swooped on the property, Lad, 9, caught a WW1 bomb while fishing. William Hartley, 9, was given a magnet fisher for Christmas, but when he used it to catch a live WW1 bomb and bring it home, armed cops swooped down on his house. When a nine-year-old boy received a magnet fisher for Christmas, he almost caught a WW1 bomb, prompting armed cops to swoop on his home. With his magnet fishing equipment, William Hartley caught the lethal munition in a canal. The gear had been given to the youngster as a Christmas present, and he had spent the following days with his grandfather recovering “old chains and pennies.” When William brought the unexploded charge home, his worried father, Andrew Hartley, 41, called the cops. Armed cops stormed the house and began guarding the deadly weapon while bomb disposal officers carried out extensive checks. And a specialist officer told the shocked father that if the century-old device had been accidentally triggered, it could have resulted in fatalities. “The top part hadn’t detonated, and that is a shrapnel bit,” Andrew explained, “and he said if that had gone off, it would have done serious damage to someone.” “He was essentially army, and he told William it was a WW1 bomb.” He didn’t know how it ended up in the canal.”

Anyway, we must never allow a child to hold a military device in his hands, even worse, if the moment is immortalized with the presence (therefore consent) of military. We can be convinced that it is only an empty envelope and that the fuze does not have internal mechanisms, capable of initiating the detonation. However, the photo in question sends a bad and diseducating message. Do not touch bombs and this rule should also be legal in the UK. Tiziana Piscitelli

If you find anything that appears to be an explosive device, do not touch it, leave it where it is and call the police. We will contact the appropriate agencies to properly dispose of the item.
