山口県光市中央5丁目付近の日鉄ステンレス山口製造所（光エリア）の敷地内で9月に見つかった不発弾1発（米国製250キロ爆弾）は21日、陸上自衛隊の不発弾処理隊が信管を取り除き、処理を終えた 午前8時から、市役所前を通る国道188号を通行止めにするなど、半径約300メートル以内が立ち入り禁止となり、住民約270人が退去。近くの光地区消防組合消防本部に現地対策本部が置かれ、約220人態勢で処理に臨んだ。 不発弾は長さ120センチ、直径36センチ。午前9時に作業が始まり、午前10時56分、弾底と弾頭の信管の除去を終えた。市川熙市長が現地を確認し、午前11時49分に安全化宣言をした 現場そばに住む50代女性は市が開設した避難所に身を寄せた。「不発弾が出ても不思議ではないと思っていた。すぐそこなので不安だった。（処理が済んで）よかった」と話した 現場は旧光海軍工廠（こうしょう）の敷地の境界部分で、市役所に近く、住宅が集まる。終戦前日の1945年8月14日、米軍機の大規模な空襲があり、動員学徒130人余を含む、少なくとも748人が犠牲になっ
