A Surrey man has spoken about his surprise after he he found an unexploded shell in his garden on Friday (November 18). Christopher Kauth was doing some gardening in his Walton home when he saw something that looked unusual. He told SurreyLive : “I was just doing some gardening. I’m getting some fencing work done at the back and it was a lovely day for it. “I was tidying up when there was this object about a foot long. It was obviously a shell and not a bomb – goodness knows how it got there. “I didn’t know what the dickens it was it was so I picked it up and thought ‘this doesn’t look right’. I moved it a bit and called the fire service.” Mr Kauth, who has lived in his property in Burwood Park Road for more than 30 years, said he found the shell around 10:30am in the morning and the fire service arrived by 11am. He added: “We were evacuated at at 11:30am until they cleared it about 1:30pm – it was a very efficient service. “They assessed and took it away – the high-risk ones are detonated on site. Fortunately it didn’t come to that or the new fences would have been blown away. “It’s absolutely bizarre. I’m going back into the garden now to finish off what I was doing three hours ago and I hope there’s no more!” A Surrey Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “The unexploded ordnance has now been removed and taken to an open location where a controlled explosion will be carried out by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team. Residents have now been informed that they are safe to return to their properties. “We would like to thank the EOD Team and Surrey Police for their support, along with local residents for their understanding in evacuating the area.” A Surrey Police spokesperson said: “We received a report of an unexploded shell that had been found in a garden in Burwood Park Road in Hersham. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal team attended, the shell was removed & taken elsewhere. It has now been disposed of through a controlled explosion.
